I’m a husband, father (two great girls) and grandfather (two wonderful boys).

I am the Director of Care at Erskine, Scotland’s foremost provider of care for veterans and their spouses.  Erskine was founded in 1916, with the aim of caring for Service men and women who had been injured in active service.  Today, care remains the cornerstone of our philosophy. We provide high quality, persona and relationship centred nursing, residential, respite and dementia care within our four homes across Scotland.

I am a visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Abertay and am on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Mental Health Nursing.

Previously I worked as an Associate Nurse Director/Lead Nurse in NHS Ayrshire & Arran/North Ayrshire HSCP; I chaired the Mental Health Nursing Forum Scotland.  While I’ve included info on my professional persona, everything in this blog about is from a personal perspective.

I’m interested in all things ‘leadership’ – specifically, but not exclusively clinical (nurse) leadership.  As a practical person I undertook SVQ IV then V in Operational Management, before engaging in more academic pursuits completing my MSc in Advanced Practice (Organisational Leadership) at the University of Dundee.

Other blog

I was the architect and administrator of, which is a blog I’d highly recommend reviewing the archives.  One reason for me starting my own ‘personal’ blog was the wide, varied and enthusiastic number of bloggers who had volunteered to write for #ayrshirehealth – I couldn’t get a word in.

This blog will be random in its content, it’s simply a way to share thoughts and ideas: thanks for reading.

Comments on each blog is very welcome, as are those who wish to ‘follow’ the blog – I hope you come back in the future.  I’m also on Twitter @dtbarron
